Four new solar-powered ferries for Berlin

The year-round operation of the four newbuilds has been commissioned by BVG for the lines F11 (Oberschöneweide) and F12 (Wendenschloß) as well as seasonally for the lines F21 (Schmöckwitz) and F23 (Rahnsdorf). With sufficient solar radiation the ferries can run on solar energy alone, when the weather gets cloudy the batteries charged over night are used for power feed. A diesel engine is no longer needed for these zero emission vessels.

Aluminium based lightweight designs built by Stralsund shipyard Formstaal, the vessels dispose of large cabins for up to 35 passengers as well as two wheelchaurs and ten bicycles. The catamarans lean waterlines allow for minimal displacement.
