Well known as travel experts for the Pacific Northwest, Clipper has provided transportation, tours and accommodations for more than eight million customers since 1986. Its ferry service offers travel opportunities to enjoy popular destinations that include Victoria, Seattle, Vancouver, San Juan Island, Portland, as well as Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

“Minimizing our environmental impact is a responsibility we take seriously,” said David Gudgel, Clipper’s CEO. “We believe Green Marine’s detailed framework and binational character can help us improve our sustainability performance and protect the Pacific Northwest’s waters and environment.”

David Bolduc, Green Marine’s executive director, heartily welcomed the ferry operator. “It’s great to see the Green Marine program gaining more recognition within the ferry sector as a proven template to reduce waste and to operate in a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable manner,” Bolduc said. “Through its participation, Clipper will be able to clearly benchmark its performance and pursue continual improvement.”

The environmental certification program offers a map for ship owners, port authorities, terminal operators and shipyard managers to voluntarily reduce their environmental footprint. Using 12 performance indicators, the comprehensive program addresses key environmental issues, such as air and greenhouse gas emissions, underwater noise, oily water, and garbage management.

Green Marine certification is a rigorous, measurable and transparent process. All results are independently verified every two years and each company’s individual performance is made public annually.

Green Marine Overview

Founded in 2007, Green Marine is a binational environmental certification program that evolved from the maritime industry’s desire to voluntarily surpass environmental regulatory obligations. To date, more than 135 ship owners, port authorities, terminal operators and shipyard managers from ocean to ocean in Canada and the United States participate in the initiative. Green Marine is unique in the support it receives from environmental organizations, government agencies and the scientific community. These supporters contribute to shaping and revising the program.
